Mobility & transport

Changing how we get around can not only reduce our carbon footprint but improve the health and wellbeing of our families and community. Increasing the use of cycling and improved public transport can help reduce our reliance on cars. Where cars are required we can start to migrate to electric vehicles (EVs).

EVs and other electrified transport (buses and trains) are part of a wider transition towards electrification of much of our end-use of energy (see The Future Is Electric).

More bike racks are on the way!

Stroud District Council announced on 6th May 2026:

We’re funding 50 new bike racks across Stroud district to make it easier and safer for people to choose cycling for everyday journeys.

These are fully funded through our Walking and Cycling Fund, including installation, building on the 205 bike stands already installed since February 2024.

The scheme is community‑led, supporting places like:

- community centres

- small businesses

- places of worship

with free, secure cycle parking.

Local venues tell us it’s helping more people travel without a car, saving fuel and carbon and making cycling a more attractive option for residents and visitors alike.

If you’d like to help your community go greener and get free bike racks installed, find out more and apply using this link:

What can you do?

  • Employees and employers: Employees can save 30% to 50% on bicycles and safety equipment via salary sacrifice through the Cycle to Work Scheme. The scheme's guidance facilitates employers providing cycles and e-cycles worth over £1,000

  • Consider cycling instead of driving sometimes - work is being done to improve the paths and bridleways in the Stroud District.

  • Use public transport when you can and when it is safe to do so (wear a mask to keep yourself and others safe).

  • Make use of the cycle track from Nailsworth to Stroud. Walkers, runners and cyclists can all use it - so respect each other’s space - and use a bell in good time when approaching walkers and runners on a bike.

  • Respect the speed limit when driving, which will help reduce pollution, and make it safer for other road users.

  • Thinking of changing your car? Then take a look at Electric Vehicles (EVs), as choices are increasing all the time, and the running costs of an EV are far lower than that for a petrol or diesel car.
