Composting in Nailsworth

On Monday 2nd November, NailsworthCAN welcomed Karen Phimister from Garden Organic in Gloucestershire and Lesley Greene from Bisley Community Composting Scheme to our talk at the Arkell Centre on Monday to tell us all about home and community composting.

The climate benefits of this are many: a circular economy where local organic material is used locally meaning fewer trips to the tip and the garden centre; better soil structure and water-retention characteristics - vital for hotter summers and climate resilience; and less green waste ending up in the bin and going to the incinerator.

There were plenty of tips about types of home composters, mixing your 'greens and browns' and getting the right conditions to turn garden and kitchen waste into a valuable material to enrich your garden, and how that is so much better than the sterile compost bought in bags.

Then we heard about three local community schemes in Bisley, Brimscombe and South Cerney - all different, to suit their particular locality - and the key aspects to setting them up:

  • getting your team

  • research & consultation

  • working with the local council

  • planning & licensing

  • governance

  • funding

Could we set a community scheme up in Nailsworth? Contact us at nailsworthcan@gmail.com if you are interested.

There is also plenty of advice and help available for home composters - see the following:
